What a shock to wake up to the news of cycling commentator Paul Sherwen’s passing.
Sherwen – alongside colleague Phil Liggett – was synonymous with the sport, and especially the Tour de France, for a generation of cyclists.
The former pro rode seven Tours de France and commentated on 33, earning him and Liggett the tag of the Voice of Cycling.
They were the voices behind DSTV’s Tour de France broadcast until 2016.
I can still hear him saying: “Phil, I have made a quick calculation . . .”
He was also fantastic at converting miles to kilometres for the various audiences around the world.
May he rest in peace.
